The brief was to communicate the story behind G. F Smith’s paper range, Extract, using a supplied piece of text as the primary content. The project required translating this narrative into a considered visual outcome that highlights the paper’s concept, origins, and material qualities. The design should bring the story to life through typography, layout, and material choices, demonstrating how the paper itself can enhance and support the message being communicated.
As is made from recycled paper cups, I wanted the design to reflect this origin by folding the sheet back into the form of a cup. The piece is designed as a sequence of folds, with each step revealing more of the story behind the paper while gradually transforming the flat sheet into a cup shape. As the folds are made, small sections are cut away to leave behind sample pieces of the paper. Designed as a mailer, the origami format encourages the recipient to physically interact with the piece, allowing them to both read about and directly experience the material qualities of the paper produced by G. F Smith.
