The aim of this project was to understand the process of typeface design through practice - learning by designing a typeface from the ground up. By moving through stages such as research, form exploration, and refinement, the project provided a hands-on understanding of how letterforms are constructed and how a cohesive typographic system is developed. This approach allowed the project to function both as a creative exploration and a practical introduction to the fundamentals of type design.
Inspired by a very old type specimen book, I set out to design a typeface that nods to classic letterforms while introducing subtle contemporary qualities. The design focuses primarily on capital letters, drawing influence from traditional serif structures. To balance this with a more modern sensibility, I incorporated certain sans serif characteristics, such as consistent stem widths across the characters. The serifs themselves were kept uniform throughout the typeface, each formed with a smooth 45° curve to create a cohesive and refined visual rhythm.
